NYU Knocks Off Vassar Men’s Volleyball Thursday Evening

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2014) – New York University earned a 3-0 non-conference win over the hosting Vassar College men's volleyball team Thursday night in action from Kenyon Hall. The Violets earned the win with scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-17.

The Brewers (9-20) took an early lead in the opening set, leading by as much as four at 11-7. NYU would tallied the next nine points to take a 16-11 advantage. Vassar would cut the NYU lead down to three at 18-15 after a kill from senior Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood School), but a six-point stretch by the Violets lifted them to a 1-0 lead.

New York University (15-10) would hit at a .400 clip in the second set, pulling away for an 11-point win in the second set. In the third and final stanza, the Brewers dropped seven of the first eight points as the Violets sealed the non-conference victory.
Vassar was paced by the eight kills from Pyne, while sophomore Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) added six finishes to go with five digs. Junior Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) had 15 assists and six digs, while Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) added three total blocks.

Freshman Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had 10 digs, marking the 17th game this year he has chalked up double-digit digs. It's also the ninth time in the last 11 matches the Cimorelli has finished with 10 or more ups. Vassar College hit .000 (19-19-74) on the night, and sided out at just a 43 percent (32-73) rate.

Chase Klein and his game-high 15 kills led the Violets, while Connor Mortland dished out 32 helpers. Jacob Getz added 10 digs for NYU, who finished the night with 10 service aces and a hitting percentage of .312.

Vassar will finish its season Saturday with a tri-match on Senior Day, as Joe Pyne will be honored prior to the 11 a.m. match of the festivities, which features Division I Rutgers-Newark and Brooklyn College.
