POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2014) – The Vassar College men's basketball team was recently chosen as the recipient of the Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award for the 2013-14 season, selected by the referees of the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA).
Looking at the areas of sportsmanship on the part of the players and the coaches and also the overall crowd at the games whether home or away are taken into consideration for the award.
Schoenfeld, a former college basketball great who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality, was one of the CBOA's founding fathers. An illness took his life in early 1956 and, as a result, the CBOA memorialized Schoenfeld through an award that would be annually presented to a person who exemplified the principles and characteristics so prominently displayed by Schoenfeld. The award best exemplifies, "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."
"This award is a positive reflection of our program and the culture that we have created this year," head coach
B.J. Dunne said. "We have set a standard of excellence within our program and I am so proud of the way our players handle themselves on and off the court. They are true student-athletes and terrific citizens who not only represent the men's basketball program in a positive manner but also Vassar College."
