Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, NY (April 26, 2014) – The Vassar College baseball team battled Liberty League-leading Union College Saturday in a big conference doubleheader, but was unable to pull off a game against the Dutchman in dropping both ends of the twin bill. Vassar was defeated 6-4 in the opening contest, falling 17-9 in the second game of the afternoon.
Game 1: Union 6, Vassar 4: W – Fishman (5-0), L – Lovizio (1-5)The Brewers nearly came all the way back from a 6-0 deficit in game one of the doubleheader, but ended falling by two in the seven-inning affair.
The Dutchmen opened the game with five runs in the bottom half of the first, David Peretti drove in two with a single just three batters into the contest. Jeff Grasso and Joe Bradlee also had RBI singles in the frame for Union.
After the Dutchmen scored a single run in the third inning, Vassar College would slice into the lead thanks to a four-spot in the fourth frame. Junior shortstop
Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) drove in a pair with a single to left field, and eventually would score the fourth run of the stanza on a
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) single.
The Brewer's best chance to even the score came in the top of the fifth, as
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) and Garfinkel posted back-to-back singles with two out. After Garfinkel swiped second, the Brewers had a pair of runners in scoring position, but couldn't push the two runs across.
Garfinkel finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) also had two hits in three at-bats. Johnson posted a 2-for-4 contest for the Brewers, who had eight total hits on the afternoon, all singles. Senior
Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) earned the complete game, going six innings and surrendering four earned runs while fanning eight Union hitters.
Game 2: Union 17, Vassar 9: W – O'Neill (5-0), L – Hong (1-3)Vassar College could not the potent lineup of Union off the board, allowing two big innings as the Dutchmen pulled away for the win.
The Brewers (12-12/7-7 Liberty) got on the board first in the opening inning thanks to a Johnson single, but UC responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Vassar exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Garfinkel and a two-out, run-scoring double by
Parker Werline (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar), to take an 8-3 lead.
The host Dutch came right back with eight runs in the bottom half, and would add six more runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. English had four hits in the second game of the day, scoring twice while taking a pair of free passes, and Werline went 4-for-5 with a run scored. Werline's four-hit performance was his first of his career, while English's four-hit affair was his second of the season.
Johnson added two hits and his team-leading 15
th double of the season, and sophomore
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. All but one of Vassar's starters had a base hit in the nightcap. Freshman
Robert Winkelmann (Wappinger's Falls, NY/Beacon) had his second consecutive solid appearance on the hill for VC, going two innings while allowing just one hit.
Vincent Esposito and Jake Fishman each had three hits for Union (18-6-1, 11-3-1 Liberty), who benefited from Vassar's six errors in the contest.

Vassar College and Union will continue its four-game series Sunday, as the Brewers host UC on Prentiss Field for a conference doubleheader at noon in Poughkeepsie, NY.
