Box Score Photo GalleryPOUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2014) – Valiant starting pitcher V.J. Collins went eight innings and Manhattanville scored five first-inning runs to knock off the Vassar College baseball team 8-2 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon from Prentiss Field.
The visiting Valiants (18-12) jumped on Vassar College quickly, plating five runs in the opening stanza thanks to four hits and an error. MC tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth frame, as Robbie Lynch and Jeff Moskowitz each had RBI in the inning.
VC (12-10) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, as
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) drove in a run with an RBI groundout. Vassar tacked on another run in the sixth inning on a squeeze bunt from
Parker Werline (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar), but couldn't get any closer as the Valiants cruised to the win.
The Poughkeepsie native Collins surrendered six hits and two runs for MC, striking out six for his first win of the year. The Brewers used five pitchers on the day, led by the solid performance by senior
Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven). The senior righty tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while walking three. Freshman
Robert Winkelman (Wappinger's Falls, NY/Beacon) tossed a scoreless ninth for VC.
Junior shortstop
Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) was 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, and fellow junior
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) added two hits. Freshman
Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marion Central Catholic) added a hit and was robbed of extra bases by a diving catch as well, and
Brad Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) also had a hit. On the day, the Brewers used a total of 15 players.
Moskowitz had three hits to lead the Valiants, while Nick Savarese also had two hits. Zack Zareva worked a scoreless ninth for Manhattanville, which now holds a 13-9 series lead over the Brewers.
Vassar College will return to the diamond in Schenectady, NY Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a huge Liberty League doubleheader with conference-leading Union College.
