POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 2, 2014) – The Vassar College men's lacrosse team handed Hudson Valley local Bard College its biggest loss of the season, defeating the Raptors 15-2 on Wednesday evening at Weinberg Field.

The Brewers (5-4, 1-1 Liberty League) got the early 5-0 lead in the first quarter with sophomore Colin Cederna (Milan, MI/Saline) scoring three of his four points of the game. After netting the game's first goal, sophomore Shane Flattery (Brewster, NY/Brewster) passed a long ball from the half line to Cederna who tucked it in the left of the cage for the 2-0 Brewer lead.

Junior Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) scored what proved to be the game-winner when Cederna fed him a pass from the right of the goal. The duo would team up just two minutes later for a man-up score at 3:08.

Senior Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) led the Brewers with four goals and an assist while also grabbing two ground balls and forcing one turnover. Both Brad Whitaker and Henry Blosfelds had a goal for the Raptors (4-3).

Brekne didn't start the game as the face-off man but ended the evening with a perfect 8-8 record and grabbed seven ground balls while having a hat-trick of his own. Freshman Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) started the event with a 6-9 face-off record and recorded two assists. Flattery rounded out the scoring with three points from a goal and two helpers while gathering four grounders and causing a turnover.

Freshman Matthew Altman (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) scored his first collegiate goal near the start of the fourth quarter when Flattery dumped a pass for the uncontested shot at 11:11 to give the Brewers the 13-1 lead.

The Brewers won the ground ball battle 56-24, while forcing a total of 20 of Bard's 35 turnovers. The Raptors only forced seven of Vassar's 23 turnovers.

The Brewer defense held the Raptors out of the shooting lanes in the third so well that Bard never fired a shot in the entire quarter. Vassar ended the game 63-10 in shots, as well as a 39-6 shots on goal advantage.

Bard's John Henry Glascock recorded an outstanding 23 saves on the day, despite picking up the loss. Senior Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY/Brewster) stopped four shots and allowed only one Bard goal.

The Brewers will next travel for a Liberty League matchup with the Saints of St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 5 at 12:00 pm.
