Vassar Baseball Swept At Rochester Saturday Afternoon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Vassar baseball team dropped a Liberty League doubleheader contest to the University of Rochester by scores of 4-2 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) brought the Brewers (10-9, 5-5 Liberty League) to within a run of Rochester in the opener with his RBI single that scored freshman Bradley Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) to make the score 3-2. Rochester added a run in the fourth for the final score.

Zaziski went 2 for 4 for the Brewers. Senior Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) took the loss in a complete-game effort. The right-hander allowed four earned runs on 12 hits, struck out one and walked one.

Michael Mondon improved to 3-2 by allowing no earned runs over five innings for Rochester (18-13, 13-7 Liberty League). Nolan Schultz finished with three hits and Josh Ludwig drove in two runs.

Vassar pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap and tied the game with a three-run sixth inning, but Rochester scored three times in the seventh to escape with the victory.

Sophomore Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) got the scoring started for Vassar in the sixth inning with a double down the left-field line that scored junior Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake). Wuenschell scored on a double play and then freshman Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) scored on a double steal when freshman Bradley Kendall stole second base.

Garfinkel went 3 for 5 at the plate with two runs scored. Junior Kyle Casey  (San Diego, CA/Vista) went 3 for 4, and sophomore Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) and Shanagher each added two hits.

Sophomore Jonathan Hong (Orinda, CA/Miramonte) did not factor into the decision after not allowing an earned run in five innings. He struck out four. Sophomore Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and struck out one.

Yellowjackets closer Evan Janifer picked up the save in both games. Ludwig drove in another two runs in the nightcap.

Vassar will take on St. Lawrence University Tuesday afternoon in more Liberty League play from Prentiss Field at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
