POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 16, 2014) – Six Vassar College hitters knocked in at least one run as the Brewers took a non-conference battle from Mount Saint Mary College (NY) 7-5 in action from Prentiss Field Wednesday.

Vassar (9-6) put its lead-off hitter on in seven of its eight at-bats against the Knights, and put pressure on the MSMC defense from the get-go. In the opening inning, freshman Bradley Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) singled, followed by a walk from junior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista). Later in the inning, sophomores Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) and Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) each delivered RBI singles to put Vassar up 2-0.

Brewer starter Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College) was superb in his three innings of work, facing the minimum while allowing just one base runner. In the bottom of the third, Vassar tacked on three more, highlighted by a two-run single by junior Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) through the right side.

MSMC (11-12) plated a single run in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull to with three at 5-2, but Vassar added two more in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI hits from Casey and Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph).

The Knights put together a late rally in the top of the ninth inning, but Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) worked out of trouble to secure the victory for the Brewers. Garfinkel had two hits in three at-bats, driving in two and scoring once for Vassar, while English was 2-for-4. Sophomore Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) drove in a run with a double, and Johnson had a single and his 11th double of the season.

Due to the NCAA rule that allows starters to get the win in "staff" day pitching arrangements, Berg earned his fourth win of the season, moving to an undefeated 4-0. Fellow freshman Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) scattered four hits but allowed no runs, striking out two for the Brewers.

Matt Cahill was 2-for-3 with two walks, while Rob Peccarillo and Jimmy Papineau also had two hits for the Knights. Joey Pugliese got the loss for Mount Saint Mary, allowing eight hits and five earned runs.

Vassar College will head to Rochester, NY to take on the University of Rochester this weekend in a huge Liberty League four-game set. The Brewers and Yellowjackets will start the series Friday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
