ELMIRA, NY (March 9, 2014) – A balanced attack for the Vassar College men's volleyball team helped lead the way as the Brewers knocked off Hilbert College 3-0 in the final United Volleyball College (UVC) match of the season, played Sunday morning at the UVC Crossover hosted at Elmira College.
The Brewers (6-16, 3-8 UVC) scored the victory with tallies of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-21. The first set saw Vassar really pound the ball, posting 17 kills in 32 attempts to take an early 1-0 lead. VC tallied 15 kills and fought off a late rally by the Hawks (4-20, 0-8 UVC) in the second set to double its match advantage. The Brew dominated play in the third game, rolling to its third UVC win of the season.
Sophomore
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) finished with 12 kills and no errors, hitting .480 for the match while adding four assisted blocks. Junior
Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) hit .500 for the contest, tallying 11 kills in 20 attempts, and senior
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) added a team-leading 14 finishes to go with five digs.
Sophomore middle hitter
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) chalked up six total rejections for the Brewers, who finished with a season-high 9.5 team blocks Sunday.
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) tied his career-best for digs in a match, thwarting 19 Hilbert attacks, and
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) handed out 25 assists. Freshman
Colin Peros (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) also had 13 assists for Vassar, which finished with an attacking percentage of .283 (43-15-99) for the day.
The Hawks were led by the nine kills from the national leader in the category Adam Weaver, but he also erred on 12 of his 38 attempts at the net. David Mellerski finished with 16 assists and 12 digs for Hilbert, who chalked up one more error (22) than kills (21).
The Brewers will get the week off before traveling to Providence, RI to take part in the Johnson & Wales Tournament this weekend. Vassar will take on Wentworth Institute of Technology Friday at 6 p.m., before turning around to battle Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 8 p.m. that evening.
