ELMIRA, NY (March 8, 2014) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team traveled to Elmira College Saturday afternoon for the second United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover of the season, taking on Medaille College and Penn State-Behrend Saturday afternoon.
Medaille captured a three-set win in the opening match of the day, defeating Vassar 25-22, 25-22 and 25-16. Vassar also dropped the second match of the day to PSUB with scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-23.
Against the Mavericks (6-6, 5-3 UVC), Vassar had a tough time hitting, swinging at just a .019 percentage for the match. In the opening set, Vassar and MC battled back and forth but the Mavericks were able to score five of the final seven points to earn the early match edge. VC trailed by as many as 10 in the second game, but inched back to within two at 24-22, but couldn't complete the rally as Trevor Barrett lifted MC to a 2-0 lead with a game-clinching kill.
In the final set of the match, Medaille connected on a .346 hitting average, while holding the Brewers to just four kills in earning the conference win. Senior
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) led the attack with 12 terminations for the contest, and fellow captain
Reno Kriz (Breingisville, PA/Parkland) chalked up nine kills and six digs.
Freshman
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) again notched double-digit digs with 13, and
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) and
Colin Peros (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) combined for 27 assists. Barrett had a game-best 16 kills for the Mavericks, who hit .275 (36-11-91) for the match.
In the second battle of the day, Vassar generated more points offensively then the Lions did, posting 67 to Penn State-Behrend's 64, but 32 attacking errors doomed the Brewers in the four-set defeat. The first set was tied at 18, but PSUB finished the game on a 7-3 run to earn a 25-21 win. Vassar responded by taking a 22-18 lead in the second set, but Behrend tallied four straight to deadlock the match at 22. Vassar persevered to take a 25-23 win to tie the match at one game apiece.
Vassar led by as many as five points in the third set, but PSUB used a 9-2 stretch to take an 18-16 lead. VC trimmed its deficit to one three times, but couldn't come all the way back as the Lions earned a 2-1 lead. Penn State-Behrend would lead from start to finish in the fourth set, earning the conference victory.
Kriz exploded for a monster game against the Lions, as he tallied a career-high 28 kills Saturday. His termination total bested his previous high of 22, which he had accomplished twice this season. It was the fifth-most successful attacks in a match ever at Vassar College, while his 65 attempts were the second-most in a match in Brewer program history.
Junior outside hitter
Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) chalked up a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs, while White-Dzuro had a career-high 54 assists to go with 11 digs. Cimorelli finished with 18 ups, one short of his career-high, and Pyne and
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) each chalked up eight kills. The Brewers completed the game with a 59-32-158 (.171) attacking rate, and posted a side-out percentage of 61 percent.
PSU-Behrend was led by the 12 kills and 10 digs from Ty Sheehan, and Grant Kocher, Nathan Steele and Kevin Smith all had 10 terminations for the Lions. Mitch Farabaugh added 21 assists and 10 digs, and Colin Ingram dished out 17 assists while digging up eight Brewer attacks. PSUB finished with a .244 hitting percentage, while blocking 10 Brewer attempts.
Vassar will finish its UVC slate tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with a tussle against the Hawks of Hilbert College.
