ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (March 5, 2014) – Senior outside hitter
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) chalked up 19 kills Wednesday, leading the Vassar College men's volleyball squad to a straight-set win over Bard College in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play.
Pyne's attack total was the highest of his senior season, besting the 18 kills he posted at home against Hunter College. It also tied a career-high for terminations in a contest, evening the total he posted last year in a win over Fontbonne. The senior and his crew cruised in the first set 25-12, and wound up winning sets two and three with scores of 25-23 and 27-25, respectively.
Vassar (5-14, 2-6 UVC) blasted the ball in the first set, chalking up 14 kills on 28 swings, posting no errors to earn the win. Defense led the way in the second game for the visitors, holding the Raptors (4-17, 1-7 UVC) to -.031 attacking to the two-set lead. In the final period, the Brewers fended off game-point at 25-24, scoring the matches last three points to pick it their second conference win.
Pyne nearly added double-digit digs to his kill total, posting nine on the night, and setter
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) dished out 37 helpers to go with four digs and two service aces. Junior
Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) added 10 kills and four digs for the Brewers, his first game double-digit kills this year.
Freshman
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished with a game-leading 14 digs on the night, which was his fourth game with 10 or more ups in the last six contests. Sophomore
Reno Kriz (Breingisville, PA/Parkland) hit .333 on the evening, finishing with eight kills and four total blocks, and
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) posted six kills and five digs.
The win over Bard moves the VC's all-time record to 14-0 over the Raptors. Billy Williams led the attacking for the hosts with nine kills, and Shane McDonald added six kills for BC. Harry Kasiske also added 21 assists, eight digs and four aces for Bard, which finished with a 25-22-92 (.033) attacking percentage.
The Brewers look to jump up the conference standing s this Saturday and Sunday at the second UVC Crossover of the season. VC will battle Medaille College and Penn State-Behrend Saturday, before concluding the UVC slate this year with a match against Hilbert College Sunday at 11 a.m. in Elmira, NY.
