What To Watch For
The schedule for the Brewers is about to get pretty crazy, as they will play five conference games over a span of five days. Vassar College has shown better pitching depth this year, but still the toll of playing that many innings will be difficult. Also, expect the pitchers to have the advantage as neither team has played in over two weeks. This will be the first game of the year at Prentiss Field this season, but the surface has held up very well and should be in good shape for Wednesday's tussle.
A Look At The Brewers (3-3)
The Brewers went to Florida to start the season, and came out strong, winning their first three games of the year. The highlight of the three-game stretch was a 16-7 win over Franklin and Marshall College, as VC connected for three homers in the game. Unfortunately, the success didn't continue, with the Brewers falling in the final three games of the Florida trip. VC fell to Utica College to conclude its time in Florida, and since then has had to postpone 10 games.
Offensively, senior
Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) has led the way for Vassar, as he is hitting .571 on the year, homering twice while driving in seven. Zaziski is also getting on base two out of every three times at the dish, and is slugging 1.000 on the year. Sophomore catcher
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) leads the team with eight RBI, posting a .467 average in four starts, and
Brooks English is 5-for-7 with runners in scoring position this year. English is tied for second on the team in hits with nine, and has driven in six runs. The Brewers have five hitters with over a .300 average at the plate.
The pitching staff got a great pitching performance out of senior
Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) in his only appearance, going seven innings while allowing two earned runs against Amherst. Freshman
Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College) fanned seven in his first collegiate start, and
Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) has been effective in relief for VC. Defensive, VC has committed 11 errors through six games, fielding at a .950 defensive clip.
A Look At The Thoroughbreds (3-6)
Skidmore has dealt with the same issues that many of the schools in the Northeast has, suffering through cancelations and postponements. The Thoroughbreds' last time out was March 14, when they fell to Fredonia State 7-2 in Fort Myers, FL. SC has dropped three of its last four games, with the lone win coming against Swarthmore College on March 13. Since its last game, Skidmore has lost nine games due to weather, including eight conference contests.
The Thoroughbreds are hitting .249 as a team so far this spring, led by Alex Pavelock and his .417 batting thus far. Pavelock is 10-for-24 on the season, while Nick Barra is hitting .310 with three stolen bases. Erik Watkins comes into the game hitting .290, leading the squad with nine RBI and six runs scored, and Mat Marino has two doubles and six hits in 23 at-bats for SC. Jeff Spindel has played in just three games, but has swung the bat well, going 4-for-10. As a team, the Thoroughbreds have struggled to hit with runners in scoring position, going 16-for-76 (.211). Skidmore has fared well against southpaws, posting a .333 clip against lefties, but is batting just .232 against right-handers.
Issac Forman, who is 1-0 on the year in two starts, posting a 2.40 ERA through 15.0 innings of work, has led the pitching staff for the Thoroughbreds. He doesn't strike out a lot of hitters, only seven so far, but is holding hitters to a .224 average against. Nick Petrella, Ben Murphy and Andrew Bannon all have started twice for Skidmore. Daniel Dasgupta has been strong in relief for Vassar, and Kenny Aiello was good in his only start of the season, surrendering just one run in 5.1 innings. SC has caught the ball well on defense, chalking up a .958 fielding percentage.
Against Skidmore All-Time
The Brewers are 19-39 against Skidmore all-time, as the Thoroughbreds took three of four from Vassar last season. Over the last 12 meetings, each team has won six games apiece. Seniors
Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) and
Brett Zaziski have combined to hit .321 in their careers against Skidmore.
Safe Travels
Brewer senior
Brett Zaziski has reached basely 29 straight games, dating back to last year. He also has an eight-game hitting streak dating back to the 2013 season.
3-4-5 Alive
The middle of the lineup for the Brewers has been hot so far this year, going 30-for-71 (.423) with 14 runs scored, nine doubles and 20 RBI.
Do It All
Junior utility man
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) has been quite the valuable tool for head coach
Jon Martin. So far this year, Casey has started a game at LF, 3B and 2B, while also playing 1B last year as a sophomore.
Regulators
Senior
Dave Robbins and sophomore
Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) have been really strong out of the pen, going a combined three and a third innings, allowing just two hits and fanning four.
Drawing First Blood
Vassar College has scored first in four of its six games so far this season, posting a 3-1 record in those games.
Lead Horse
The Brewers have done well once getting out in front, as they are 3-0 when leading after the third inning. On the other hand, VC is 0-3 when trailing after the fourth stanza.
Liberty Leader
The Brewers currently have four players leading the way in their offensive category, led by
Brett Zaziski, who is atop the batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage lists. Sophomore
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) also leads the Liberty League in doubles with five.
Up Next
The Brewers will host Clarkson University this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in a pair of conference doubleheaders. Saturday, Vassar will entertain the Golden Knights at 1 p.m. on Prentiss Field, before playing host again on Sunday at noon.
