POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 29, 2014) – The Vassar College men's lacrosse team earned its first Liberty League victory of the season Saturday, getting a balanced scoring attack and stifling defensive effort in a 10-5 win over Skidmore College in league play from Weinberg Field.

The Brewer (4-4, 1-1 Liberty League) victory was their first over Skidmore College in program history, and it also was the first Liberty League win since a 5-4 win over St. Lawrence University back on April 16, 2011. Saturday was Vassar's first-ever win at home.

"Today was a great win for our program, and for our seniors," said head coach Marc Graham. "Today our team showed that when we play together, we're patient and when we finish our opportunities we can be a competitor in this conference."

Vassar jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, striking just seven seconds into the contest on a Brandon DeStasio (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) goal. The visiting Thoroughbreds (1-7, 0-2 Liberty) evened the game at one at the 10:18 mark of the first quarter, but three unanswered tallies sent Vassar into the second period up 4-1.

The second stanza saw the Brewers hold possession, while locking up the Skidmore attack. The lone goal of the second quarter came at 8:57, as Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored his second of the day to give VC a 5-1 halftime lead. After the intermission, the Thoroughbreds close the gap, scoring four of the period's five goals to make the score 6-4 going into the fourth.

Vassar would regain control of the game in the fourth, posting five straight goals including the clincher with nine seconds remaining from Shane Flattery (Brewster, NY/Brewster). Herman led the offense for the Brewers, posting two goals to go with three assists. DeStasio scored twice on three shots, Colin Cederna (Milan, MI/Saline) added two goals and Sean Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) also netted a pair.

Sophomore Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek) dished out three assists for Vassar, who outshot the Thoroughbreds, 42-28. The Brewer defense was paced by Eric Prezioso (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge) with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Brian Kube (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) chalked up three caused giveaways.

Freshman Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) had a game-high of seven ground balls for Vassar, as he won 10-of-18 face-offs on the day. Senior Andrew Nicol (Carmel, NY/Brewster) made 10 saves in net for the Brewers, who edged Skidmore in the ground ball column, 24-21.

"Our defense, anchored by Andrew Nicol who was amazing as usual, can really make it tough to score goals. I'm very proud of my team today," said Graham.

Skidmore was paced by the two goals from Kevin Mulvey, while Quinn Hawkins and Jack Metzler each finished with a goal and an assist. Matt Diaco stopped 12 shots for Skidmore Saturday.

The Brewers are back in action Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., hosting Bard College on either Gordon Field or Weinberg Field, depending on field conditions.
