A Look At The Brewers
The Brewers (4-3, 0-1 Liberty League) finished their Southern California spring break trip with a record of 3-2, only falling to then #7 and #10 Bowdoin and Pomona-Pitzer, 2-7 and 0-9, respectively. They ended their stay on the West Coast with an 8-1 win over California Institute of Technology and a 6-3 win against now #26 Chapman University. Junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) posted a winning record at No. 1 singles with a 3-2 stay. She then teamed with freshman
Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) at No. 1 doubles for a 3-1 stay.
Both singles and doubles have winning records for the Brewers this season. The doubles pairs are 31-22 including a 13-8 stay in dual match play while the individuals are 52-49 in 2013-14 so far. No. 4 and No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles all have season dual match records of 5-2 being led by sophomores
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and
Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart). Stauffer is 3-0 at No. 4 and 1-2 at No. 5 while Van Noy adds a 2-0 record at the fifth position. The two pair up in doubles for a 3-1 partner record and Stauffer adds another two wins at No. 3 with separate plays with freshman
Connie Yoo (Irvine, CA/Beckman) and senior
Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach).
A Look At The Saints
The Saints have dominated this season, boasting an overall record of 9-2 and winning their first 6 matches of the season, including Cornell, Haverford, and St. Michael's. The Brewers need to bring their A-game when they enter Saint territory because they are undefeated at home. However, the Saints are just coming off a harsh 1-8 loss against Skidmore (nationally ranked at #25) on March 23, and will be looking to redeem themselves.
Leading the pack in singles is freshman Hallie Young, with an overall record of 8-1, although she mostly plays in No. 6. The Saints are better together, with a .806 winning average in doubles (.746 in singles). The Brewers should watch out for Morgan McNeal and Elkie Vandenbeemt working as a team. With a 7-2 record and a consistent No. 1 placement, they lead the Saints in doubles play.
Against St. Lawrence All-Time
The Brewers have never been defeated by the Saints in their eight meetings since 2001's UCAA Championships. The Brewers have also shutout St. Lawrence in three separate occasions while never giving up more than three match points.
A Look At The Tigers
The Tigers have had a frustrating season, with four of their last six games postponed. The Tigers only have one score so far, a loss against Niagra University in February. They fell 0-7 without scoring a single point. However, a pair of seniors gave a strong showing at the season-opening New York State Championships. Maite Antelo advanced to the third round in singles and Sara Bjork fought into the semifinals in doubles before falling to Hunter College's competitors 9-8.
Against RIT All-Time
The Brewers and Tigers have only met three times before with two of the instances occurring in the UCAA Championships in 2000 and 2001. The Brewers lost the second meeting but made up for it in the 2012 with a 9-0 sweep.
Regionally-Ranked Doubles
Schapiro and Becker earned a spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) first release of the 2013-14 Northeast Region rankings. The junior-freshman pair are seated at #13 out of the 15 teams ranked including two of the three duos from #1 Williams College and #2 Amherst College.
Advancing Nationally
The Brewers just moved from #27 to #25 nationally-ranked by the ITA in the March 27 release. They helped drop Chapman University from #23 to #26 with their defeat of them during the California spring break trip. Also dropping lower than Vassar were Case Western Reserve and Trinity (TX) to #27 and #28 from their previous rankings of #25 (Trinity) and #26 (Case Western).
Up Next
The Brewers will next host their second to last Liberty League match before the playoffs in May with the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute making the journey to Josselyn Tennis Courts on Saturday, April 5 at 10:00 am.
