NEWBURGH, NY (March 26, 2014) – Senior attack
Max Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) posted a hat trick Wednesday for the Vassar College men's lacrosse team, but a late tally by Mount Saint Mary College gave the hosts a 10-9 victory.
The Brewers (3-4) outshot their hosts 20-12 in the opening half, but took a 5-3 deficit into halftime. Vassar College fell behind by four at 9-5 after three quarters of play, but would charge back in the fourth. The Brewers scored the first four goals of the final period, two from
Sean Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), to complete a 6-0 run and tie the game at nine with 7:03 to play.
The host Knights (3-4) capitalized on a man-up opportunity with 4:47 to go in the game to take a 10-9, and VC couldn't tie the game with its final four shot attempts of the game. Herman posted with a team-best four points on three goals and an assist, and
Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek) added two goals and an assist.
Brazier scored twice on three shots, and
Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) scored once and had a team-best seven ground balls, winning 9-of-16 from the face-off dot. Junior
Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) also had a goal, two assists and two ground balls for VC, which outshot its hosts, 42-28. The Brewers also won the ground ball count, 44-38. Defender
Eric Prezioso (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge) chalked up six ground balls and three caused turnovers as well for Vassar.
CJ Cardo notched a team-best three goals, including the game-winner, while Jake Robison added two scores and three assists for MSMC.
The Brewers will return to Weinberg Field Saturday at noon (previously 1 p.m. - note the change), entertaining Skidmore College in Poughkeepsie, NY in Liberty League play.
