WINTER HAVEN, FL (March 17, 2014) – Utica College posted 12 runs over the first three innings to pull away and earn a 16-2 victory over the Vassar College baseball team in the final contest of the Florida trip at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Monday.
Utica (3-0) posted three runs in the first half of the first, stringing together four hits throughout the frame to take a quick lead. The Pioneers sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, capped by a two-run double by Vincent Burillo to extend the lead to 9-0. UC added three more runs on a Alec Choleva three-run homer in the third to take a 12-0 advantage.
Vassar got on the board in the bottom of the third, as
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) doubled in
Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) for VC's lone runs of the game. Utica tacked on one run in the fifth and three more in the seventh to earn the win.
Johnson finished with a 2-for-4 day, while Zaziski was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and a hit by pitch. Zaziski upped his hitting streak to eight games dating back to last year, and has now reached safely in his last 29 contests.
Freshman
Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) singled in his first plate appearance at Vassar, and
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton) extended his hit streak to eight games with a single in the second inning.
Choleva finished 3-for-4 with six RBI for the Pioneers, while Adam Pexton had four hits and scored four times. Utica finished with 17 hits on the morning, as the top five of the order went a combined 14-for-22.
Vassar College's Wednesday game with Mt. St. Mary College has been postponed due to field conditions, with a make-up to be determined. The Brewers' Liberty League doubleheader with Skidmore College this Saturday is still on as of right now, with the twinbill set to take place in Poughkeepsie, NY at noon.
