AUBURNDALE, FL (March 16, 2014) – The Vassar College baseball squad dropped its second contest of the season Sunday afternoon, falling to Grinnell College (IA) 13-4 in non-conference action from the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational from Lake Myrtle Park.

The Brewers (3-2) opened the game by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first, plating a tally in the opening frame for the fourth time in five games. Junior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) singled, eventually scoring on a two-out single from Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy). Sophomore Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) followed English with a RBI single to put VC up 2-0.

The Pioneers (3-1) came right back with two runs in the bottom half, but Vassar responded with another two-spot in the top half of the second. VC benefitted from two runs that came off of a throwing error from Pioneer shortstop Anthony Mack.

Grinnell scored one in the bottom of the second to trim the lead to one, eventually taking the lead with a five-run third frame. Pioneer starter Will Pahos settled in from that point, holding the Brewers scoreless over his last four innings of work. GC added on two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 13-4 lead. Vassar outhit its opponents on the day, 12-9, but the Pioneers benefitted 12 Brewer free passes.

Junior shortstop Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) was 2-for-4 with a double, and senior Parker Werline (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) had two hits in four at-bats. Casey posted a 2-for-4 day with a run scored, while Wuenschell had two hits and a RBI. Junior Dan McCormack (Nashua, NH/Nashua) came off the bench to single in his only plate appearance.

Freshman Mike Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Mairian Central Catholic) was solid in relief, going three and two-thirds, allowing just two hits and three earned, and Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) worked a scoreless ninth, his second clean inning in two days.

Mack finished 4-for-5 with five RBI for the Pioneers, as Pahos earned the win on the hill, going six complete while surrendering three earned runs and nine hits. Andrew Kelley got the three inning save, allowing just three hits, as GC was 8-for-22 with runners in scoring position Sunday, and 7-for-19 in RBI opportunities.

Vassar finishes its Florida trip Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. against Utica College at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL.
