Joe Pyne Earns All-Tournament At Johnson & Wales As Vassar Splits Pair Of Matches

PROVIDENCE, RI (March 15, 2014) – Senior outside hitter Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) was tabbed as a Johnson & Wales University All-Tournament Team member Saturday as Vassar College knocked off York College (NY) 3-1. VC fell in the first match of the day to the host Wildcats in five sets.

In the opening match of the day, the Brewers (8-18) dropped a five-setter with scores of 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-11. For the second consecutive match, Vassar held a 2-1 match advantage but could not hold on as Johnson & Wales rallied for the win.

Vassar earned the opening set to take an early match lead, thanks to hitting .476 in the first game. JWU evened the match at one game apiece thanks to 15 second-set kills, but Vassar responded by holding the Wildcats to a 7-6-28 (.036) attacking clip in earning a 2-1 advantage. JWU forced a fifth game after posting a game-best 18-kill set, and finished off the by scoring the matches' final four points.

Pyne chalked up a team-leading 18 kills, adding nine digs to his tally, while Reno Kriz (Breingisville, PA/Parkland) finished with 14 kills, nine digs and two aces. Junior Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) attacked at a .500 percentage, totaling 14 kills.

Junior Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) added 46 assists and five digs, and Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had a game-high of 12 digs. Shawn Kennedy posted 23 kills and 10 digs to pace the Wildcats.

In the final match for the Brewers in Providence, Pyne and Kriz combined for 33 kills in rolling past York in four games. Pyne posted 17 kills and six digs, while Kriz added 16 terminations and four total blocks. Fearn-Johnson added seven kills, and Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) tallied six kills. White-Dzuro finished with 21 assists while freshman Colin Peros (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) had 29 helpers and five digs.

The Brewers are off for a two weeks before taking on Springfield College and Sacred Heart University in Kenyon Hall at 3 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, NY.
