WINTER HAVEN, FL – Amherst College starting pitcher Dylan Driscoll held the Vassar College baseball team to just five hits and no runs over eight innings of work to help the Lord Jeffs to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers in action from Chain of Lakes Park Saturday afternoon.

Driscoll was rarely in trouble in his first start of the year, and was very efficient with his pitches, throwing just 90 through eight frames. Eric Kotin came in to earn the save for Amherst, tossing 11 pitches in a scoreless ninth. Driscoll finished with five strikeouts and just one walk in his outing.

The Jeffs (1-0) opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of tallies, marking the first time this spring that the Brewers had trailed. Amherst strung together back-to-back doubles by Conner Gunn and Taylor Jacobs to get on the board, and Andrew Valdini singled in Jacobs to put the Jeffs up by a pair.

Amherst added to its lead in the top of the fifth, benefitting from a pair of Vassar College (3-1) errors to tack on another run. After that inning, Vassar starter Joe Lovizio (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) was strong, holding the Lord Jeffs off the board for the final three innings of his seven complete frames. Sophomore Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) and Dave Robbins (Rumson, NJ/Rumson Fair-Haven) each worked a scoreless inning for VC as well.

Lovizio surrendered eight hits and fanned five batters for the Brewers, who also got three singles from senior first baseman Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph). Zaziski is now hitting .625 after the three-hit afternoon, and Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) and Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) each had hits for the Brewers.

"Joe (Lovizio) pitched well, he pitched really well actually," said head coach Jon Martin. "We ran into a few problems but really we played well. Driscoll is a good pitcher, keeps the ball down, and we just couldn't get much going."

The Brewers will return to the diamond Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they battle Grinnell College at Lake Myrtle Park in more play from the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
