WINTER HAVEN, FL (March 13, 2014) – The Vassar College baseball team moved to 3-0 on the young season after defeating Medaille College 6-3 Thursday morning in non-conference action from the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park. The win marked the second consecutive season Vassar has started the season with wins in its first three outings.

The Brewers continued their early season trend of starting fast, as they tallied a pair of runs in the first for the third straight game. Freshman Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) led off with a single, and junior Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) reached on an error to put runners at first and second.

Senior Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) came through with a RBI single, and sophomore Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) followed with a two-out RBI knock of his own to give Vassar a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Medaille (2-3) answered with a run of its own in the bottom half to trim the Vassar lead to one.

VC doubled its tally in the top of the third, putting together a two-out rally after Shanagher and Casey were retired to start the inning. Zaziski doubled, and Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) reached on an error to prolong the stanza. English answered the call for the Brewers, delivering another two-out hit, this time scoring a pair with a single to left field to give VC a three-run cushion.

The Mavericks plated a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Jeff Becker doubled in a run, but Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College) struck out a batter and got a fly out to right to end the threat. The Brewers got the run right back in the next half-inning, as Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) singled through the left side with one out to push the Brewer lead back up to three.

Vassar added to its advantage in the top of the eight, as Wuenschell doubled to start the inning, moving to third on a ground out by Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake). Later in the frame, freshman Bradley Kendall (Redlands, CA/Redlands) plated the sophomore catcher with an infield single. Medaille answered with a score in the bottom of the eighth, but reliever Michael Koscielniak (Crystal Lake, IL/Marian Central Catholic) worked out of the jam. Koscielniak would finish off the Mavericks in the ninth, picking off the final out with runners at first and third with the tying run at the plate, lifting the Brew to the victory.

Zaziski led the way offensively for Vassar, as he finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. English was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Wuenschell added two hits and an RBI. Berg was solid in his collegiate debut, going six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, fanning seven Maverick hitters. Koscielniak earned the save, surrendering no earned runs and two hits.

The Brewers are off Friday afternoon before taking on Amherst College Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in continued play at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
