Women's Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener 19-8 To Regis

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (March 12, 2014) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener against Regis University 19-8 at Washburn Field of Colorado College Wednesday evening during the Brewers' (0-1) spring break trip.

Junior attack Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) led the Brewers with four goals off of nine shots. Sophomore attack Isabelle Goldstein (Belmont, MA/Belmont) added two netters from three shots while freshman Julia Trudell (Newtown, CT/Newtown) scored her first two collegiate goals with a perfect shot percentage, having fired only twice and rounding out the Vassar scoring effort.

The Rangers (2-2) had an early start with two goals within the first two minutes of play. Davis put the Brewers on the board with an unassisted goal at 27:22, cutting the Regis lead to 2-1. Vassar gave up another three goals following but then recorded two of their own from Trudell and Davis, making it a 5-3 game.

Regis ended the first half with six goals in a row, including three in the final 1:55 led by Erin Todd's first half hat-trick and went into the half up 11-3.

Goldstein and Davis both scored twice and Trudell got her second goal off a pass from senior midfielder Zoe Ripecky (Chicago, IL/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) during the Brewers' five-goal comeback run that started the second half. Down 11-8, the Brewers' defense fell silent as the hosts at the neutral site broke away from the slowly-closing gap and tucked away the final eight netters.

The Brewers and Rangers both managed to capitalize on three of their free position shots. The Brewers had eight attempts compared to Regis's seven and were led by Davis's 2-of-3 performance.

Despite the final 20 minutes of play, the Brewer defense was present. Junior Jacqueline Palma (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset Junior-Senior) forced a team-best three turnovers and recovered the team-high of three ground balls. Freshman Brittany Botticelli (Commack, NY/Commack) also matched the top stat for the team with three pickups of her own.

Regis recovered 27 ground balls on the evening while the Brewers only managed 18. All but two of Vassar's turnovers were caused as well. The Brewers did win more draw controls than the Rangers, 16-13 with Davis's game-high of seven.

Gianna Lombardi got the win for the Rangers, stopping 13-of-21 shots on goal. Vassar saw action from all three goalies on the roster with Kate Pula (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) getting the first half start with five saves and 11 goals allowed. Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School) recorded three saves while the Regis offense snuck seven past her. Pula earned the goalie loss.

Vassar will next take on Colorado College on Friday, March 14 at 4:00 pm Mountain Time.
