Vassar Men’s Volleyball Shows Fight In Two Non-Conference Losses Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 1, 2014) – On a day that saw two starters injured which forced head coach Rob Wolter to play with only seven healthy players, the Vassar College men's volleyball team pushed Thiel College and No. 2 Juniata College to four games each. Unfortunately for VC, it couldn't pick up a win in dropping a pair of non-conference outings Saturday.

The opening match of the day with Thiel College saw a trend continue this year, as the Brewers (4-12) won the first set for the eighth time this season with a 29-27 triumph. The Tomcats (9-7) would take control, earning wins in the final three sets with scores of 25-27, 25-21 and 25-23.

Sophomore right side Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) continued his offensive assault with a game-best 21 kills, hitting .370 (21-4-46) for the match. He also added eight digs and two total rejections. Senior outside Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) added nine kills and six digs, and junior Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) just missed a rare triple-double with 14 assists, 12 digs and eight kills.

Freshman Colin Peros (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) was forced into setting duties after an injury to Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby), and finished with a game-best 29 assists and five digs. Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) posted a match-best 14 digs for VC. The Brewers swung at just a .080 percentage (48-37-137), as the Tomcats blocked 21 Vassar attempts.

In the evening match against the second-ranked Eagles, Vassar College again came out of the gates strong by taking the first set, 27-25. The next two contests were thrillers, with the Brewers fighting back multiple times, but Juniata would take a 2-1 lead after earning scores of 26-24 and 30-28. In the final set, the shorthanded Brewers ran out of gas, falling 25-21.

White-Dzuro chalked up 12 kills and three service aces, and Pyne and Kriz each finished with 12 terminations as well. Cimorelli added another double-digit dig contest with 12 ups, and Peros handed out 42 assists to go with six digs and two assisted blocks. Sophomore Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) added five kills and four blocks for the host. Vassar connected for a hitting percentage of .133 in the second match of the day.

The Brewers will jump right back into non-conference play Sunday afternoon, traveling across the Hudson River to battle No. 1 New Paltz and Dominican University (IL).
