Men's Volleyball Drops Close 3-1 Decision To Elmira In Final Day Of MIT Crossover

    CAMBRIDGE, MA (February 9, 2014) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team dropped a hard fought, 3-1 loss to Elmira College at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Rockwell Cage Sunday afternoon in a UVC Crossover.

    The Soaring Eagles (7-4, 2-2 UVC) won by game scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-22.

    Sophomore Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) led the Brewers (2-5, 1-3 UVC) with 17 kills and added 10 digs. Senior Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) added 14 kills and eight digs on the day while freshman Colin Peros (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) recorded 12 digs. Junior Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, ON/Royal St. George) had 33 assists and added 11 digs.

    Kriz and sophomore Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum School) penciled in two points from back-to-back kills in the second game, giving Vassar the 16-15 lead and started a 9-5 set-winning run. Elmira gave up a straight-four points in the spree due to two attacking errors and two aces from Halberg.

    Pyne and Kriz teamed for the final two points of the game.

    The Brewers attempted to fight back in the fourth set with a 8-5 stand keyed by Pyne, Kriz and Halberg, but some errors by Vassar and a kill from Ryan Nerney secured Elmira the match.

    Mike Ellison led the Eagles with 10 kills and 10 digs. Michael Vellutato was the game-high assists leader with 34 and Erik Griffin added 11 digs to the winning effort.

    The Brewers will next host UVC opponent, Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 pm in Kenyon Hall. The Soaring Eagles will next travel to Mahwah, NJ for the Ramapo College Tri-Match. Elmira faces Brooklyn College at 12:00 pm on Friday, February 15 and then Ramapo at 2:00 pm.
