ROCHESTER, NY (February 7, 2014) – Thanks to a combined 44 points from seniors
Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) and
Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington), the Vassar College women's basketball earned an 86-73 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology Friday evening in Liberty League action.
The first half of the game saw the Brewers shoot at a blistering 65.6 percent (21-32), slowly building their lead out to 19 at the half. VC (16-3, 9-1 Liberty League) used a 12-1 run midway through the period to extend a three-point advantage to a 14-point edge. Senftleber led all scorers in the first half with 15 points; RIT's Courtney Tennant added 11 points for the hosts, as all but one Brewer scored in the opening stanza.
The Brewers came out of the gates in the second half on fire, as Matsuoka chalked up the first eight points of the half for VC. Visiting Vassar led by as much as 25 points midway through the period, but the host Tigers refused to go away, trimming the Brewer lead to eight with 2:30 to play. VC stayed composed, and iced the game from the line.
The victory was tied for squad's longest winning stretch of the season, tying the mark of the run put together to start the 2013-14 season. Matsuoka led all scorers with 23 points, making eight of the 12 shots she took. The senior guard also filled her stat line with seven boards and six assists.
Senftleber scored all but three of her 18 points in the opening period, going 9-for-13 from the field, pulling in a team-leading 14 rebounds. Junior
Nyah Berg (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) came off the bench to post 11 points, and
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) supplemented the offense with nine points and seven assists.
Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area) also added seven points and seven rebounds.
The Brewers shot a very solid 53.5 percent (32-60) on field goals Friday, connecting on four of their 10 shots from deep. Though normally a strength for Vassar, free throw shooting saw VC make just 18 of the 30 attempts (60 percent) it took. Vassar out-rebounded RIT 50-31, marking the 15
th time this season that Vassar has pulled in more caroms than its foe.
RIT shot just 36.6 percent from the field, making 26 of its 71 shot attempts. Ashlynn Palmitesso led the Tigers (9-10, 5-5 LL) with 22 points, Tennant posted 13 points, and Jess Kramer and Mallory Apperson each had 10 apiece for the hosts.
Vassar College will finish its modest three-game road trip Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against William Smith College in Geneva, NY. Vassar's only league loss of the season came at the hands of the Herons back on January 17 in Poughkeepsie.
