CAMBRIDGE, MA (February 22, 2014) -- The Vassar College men's volleyball team pushed host and No. 10 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Saturday, but couldn't come up with a set in falling 3-0 in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action. MIT earned the win with scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-21, upping its record to 11-2, while VC dropped to 4-8 on the year.
In the first set of the match, Vassar came out of the gates strong, looking to earn the early advantage. The Brewers built their lead up to as much as four at 17-13, but MIT rallied to tie the match at 18. VC would capture three of the next four points, but the Engineers again clawed back to knot the ledger at 21.
VC had game point at 24-23 after sophomore
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) chalked up a kill and block, but MIT posted a point to deny the Brewers the set win. After the two teams exchanged points until 26, the Engineers would earn the final two points to win the opening set.
In the second game, MIT built a small lead but were caught and passed by the Brewers, who took a 15-13 lead. A 7-2 run at the end of the set though spelled doom for Vassar, lifting MIT to a 2-0 match lead.
The final set was close in the begining, as the squads tied at 11. The Engineers rattled off an 8-1 run to take control, pulling away for the conference victory. Kriz paced the Brewers offensively with a team-best 12 kills.
Senior
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) added a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, while junior outside hitter
Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) contributed nine kills and three assisted blocks.
Setter
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) finished with a game-high 34 assists, posting seven digs and two aces as well, and
Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) chalked up three kills, six digs and two assisted blocks. Freshman
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) registered seven digs from his libero spot.
Vassar hit .125 (39-26-104) on the afternoon, and led the dig column, 34-27. MIT was led by a balanced attack, as Brad Gross and Martin Krasuski each had eight kills, with Paul Syta finishing just behind his teammates with seven terminations.
Thursday night will see the Brewers back on the court, as they head to New York City at 7 p.m. to take on New York Univeristy in UVC action.
