Vassar Men Fall To Clarkson In OT 77-75; Still Clinch #2 Spot In League Playoffs

Box Score

POTSDAM, NY (February 22, 2014) – The Vassar College men's basketball team spent all season without going to overtime. On Saturday, however, the Brewers went into extra minutes but a layup from Jeremy Liss and a pair of free throws from Marques Charlton lifted the host Clarkson University Golden Knights over Vassar, 77-75 in the final regular season game of the year.

The loss did not affect the Brewers' (18-7, 10-6 Liberty League) playoff outlooks. Vassar still clinched the #2 spot and will host #3 Skidmore College on Wednesday, February 26 at 8:00 pm.

Sophomore Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) was the game-high scorer on Saturday with 29 points. His score was supplemented with 11 rebounds as his third double-double of the year. Mrlik finished the evening, going 6-of-14 from three-point range and totaled 11-of-24 in the field goal category. He also added a team-high three steals.

Juniors Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) and Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) each recorded 14 points while Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) was one tally and one board away from a double-double with 9-and-9 in the respective columns.

John Coleman led the Golden Knights (16-9, 10-6 Liberty League) with 28 points and 11 boards while Charlton finished with 20 points. Charles McAllister added 10 caroms from the bench.

The largest lead of the game was that of Clarkson's when the Golden Knights scored the first 10 points of the game. Mrlik responded with a jumper and back-to-back three-pointers while Ladan netted a layup of his own, tying the game 10-10. The game was tied 11 times with four lead changes.

The Brewers finish the season with the most Liberty League wins in school history and are tied for most overall wins. The Brewers were picked to finish eighth in the League this year in the preseason polls. #2 Vassar will next host #3 Skidmore on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
