Pyne Leads Vassar Men’s Volleyball To Straight Set Win Over Hunter

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 18, 2014) – Senior outside hitter Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Academy) chalked up a big double-double of 18 kills and 13 digs in helping the Vassar College men's volleyball team snap a four-game losing skid with a 3-0 victory over Hunter College in non-conference action Tuesday.

The Brewers (3-8) earned the win with scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 28-26. The first set saw visiting Hunter (3-6) take an early 12-9 lead, but the Brewers rattled off 9-1 run to take an 18-13 advantage. Vassar College would hold that lead through the rest of the game, thanks in part to the play from Pyne, who tallied 10 kills in the first set.

The second set saw Vassar College post its third-best hitting percentage in a set all season thus far, chalking up a 14-2-23 (.522) hitting clip to breeze by the Hawks for a two-set lead. In the third set, Vassar took an early three-point lead and would continue to lead by three most of the game.

With the score 20-17, Hunter rallied to take a 24-23 edge but a kill from Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) tied the score and forced extra points. After the game was extended out to 26 apiece, a kill by Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) and a solo block by Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum) sealed the match for VC.

Pyne got to his 18 points on 28 swings, posting just six errors for a hitting percentage of .429. Fellow captain Kriz added 14 kills, 11 of which came in games two and three, to go with six digs, and freshman setter Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) showed his versatility by playing outside and registering nine terminations on just 18 attempts.

White-Dzuro finished with 40 assists, two aces and three rejections for the Brewers, who chalked up their second-best hitting percentage of the season at .362. The defense was solid for Vassar, siding out at a 78 percent rate, thanks much in part to the play of freshman Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and his nine digs. VC allowed the Hawks just one service ace all night, while registering six.

The eight kills from Steven Tarquinio sparked Hunter, while Nino Hot and Mehmet Ozturk each chalked up six finishes apiece for HC. Stanley Martinez dished out 24 assists, and Eric Lodde had a team-leading 12 digs for the Hawks.

The Sage Colleges will be the next test for Vassar College, as the Brewers travel to Troy, NY Friday at 7 p.m. to take on the Gators in non-conference action.
