BOSTON – Vassar College traveled to Emerson College Saturday afternoon to take part in a men's volleyball tri-match with the host Lions and Endicott College, but was unable to pick up wins in either match in non-conference play.
The Brewers (2-8) fell to Endicott College in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-18. In the second match of the day against host Emerson, Vassar College fought hard but dropped a four-setter, posting a 26-24, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23 score line.
In the opening match of the day, the Brewers managed to hit just .031 on their attacking, posting 30 kills and 27 errors on 98 attempts. Endicott tallied a .385 hitting percentage (39-9-78) en route to the three-set victory. Junior
Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) led the team with nine kills and seven digs, both squad highs.
Captains
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) and
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) each provided seven terminations for VC, and
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) added 24 helpers and four digs. Travis Netherton finished with a game-high 12 successful attacks for the Gulls (5-3).
The second match of the day with Emerson was a tight one throughout, as both of the first two sets required extra points. In the opening set, Vassar led most of the set and owned a 23-20 advantage after an ace from freshman
Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby). Emerson responded with the next four points, and following a point from the Brewers, would capture the next two tallies to earn the opening game.
The second set was much like the first, as the Brewers were ahead for the majority of the game. Vassar held a five-point edge at 22-17, and had game point at 24-21 after a kill by Pyne. The Brewers couldn't seize the set though, as the Lions scored the final four points of the set to earn the game, 26-24.
Vassar battled back with a win in the third set, turning a 12-10 deficit into a 16-12 lead after a stretch of six straight points, highlighted by two kills each from Pyne and Kriz. Emerson tied the game at 19, but four straight tallies lifted VC to the 25-22 win. The final set saw the hosts take an early lead, nursing their advantage for most of the set. Vassar got as close as one at 24-23 on a kill from Fearn-Johnson, but a kill from Jackson Wiley sealed the match for Emerson.
Kriz had a big contest against the Lions, hitting .432 for the match, tallying 22 kills on 44 swings. The sophomore right side also finished with four assisted blocks and four digs. Pyne finished with 16 kills, while Fearn-Johnson added five kills and eight digs. White-Dzuro and Rutledge combined to hand out 44 assists, and
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) tied for the team-lead with eight digs.
Vassar College will return to the floor Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Kenyon Hall, entertaining the Hawks of Hunter College in non-conference action.
