NORTHAMPTON, MA --Â (February 15, 2014) - The Vassar squash team fell again on Saturday to No. 49 Fordham University 8-1 in the Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) Championships. This is the fourth time that the Brewers have faced Fordham's squash team this season, and they have been defeated every time.
The strongest fighter in this match and also the only Vassar winner against Fordham was sophomore
Juan Pablo Fernandez (Colonia Chimalistac, Mexico/United World), who beat out Fordham's Alexander Laversa at No. 4 in a grueling five-game match, eventually defeating him 11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10. The victory is especially exciting in Fernandez because of his season's rocky start. Of his first 16 matches of the season, he won only a single match until he defeated opponents from both Siena and Gettysburg Colleges at the Hudson Valley Team Tournament on February 8.
Fighting tooth and nail for every point on Saturday was junior
Noah Kulick (Cambridge, MA/Beaver Country Day) in the No. 8 position. Kulick was the only Brewer despite Fernandez to push his match beyond three games. After dropping the first game 11-6, Kulick bounced back to reverse the score and win the second game 6-11. However, Kulick eventually fell to Fordham's James Potts 11-6, 6-11, 11-2, 11-7.
Senior team co-captain
Ricardo Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano) dropped his match at No. 1 against Fordham's Kincade Webster, a player who Espinosa lost to on February 2 and who also beat Fernandez back in November. Espinosa fell hard, losing the match after scoring only 11 points total for a final score of 11-3, 11-5, 11-3.
Carly Scher (Penn Valley, PA/Herriton) was the only freshman and only lady Brewer to battle Fordham on Saturday, ending with a final score of 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 against Matt Crowe, not quite living up to her previous loss to the same player on February 2, when the score ended at 13-11, 11-4, 11-7.
The Brewers will play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Siena College to determine their place in the CSA competition.
