No.12 Stevens Trips Up Men’s Volleyball In Four Games Wednesday

                  POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 12, 2014) – No. 12-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology got 18 kills from Chris Vaughan in knocking off Vassar College 3-1 in non-conference men's volleyball play from Kenyon Hall. The Ducks shook off a Vassar College game one victory to earn a 24-26, 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 win.

                  Vassar (2-6,1-4 UVC) roared out of the gates, leading by as much as seven in the first set at 15-8 following an ace by senior Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary). The Ducks (5-3,4-1 UVC) responded with a 10-2 run to take a 19-17 lead, but VC quickly tied the match at 19.

                  The Brewers battled through the end of the stanza, and after the score was deadlocked at 24, got back-to-back points to earn the first set. From that point forward though, Stevens would control the match. The visitors hit .419 in the second set to knot the match at one, and took the third game thanks to holding VC to a 4-10-35 (-.171) hitting clip.

                  In the final set of the evening, Stevens opened up a seven-point edge after 15 points. VC battled back to make the score 22-18 and forced a Duck timeout, but the hosts could not rally in falling in the deciding fourth set.

                  Sophomore Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) led the Brewers with 14 kills, while Pyne finished with 10 kills and eight digs. Junior outside hitter Colin Fearn-Johnson (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) terminated seven rallies to go with nine digs and three assisted blocks for the Brewers, who registered 37-25-119 (.101) hitting for the night.

                  Junior setter Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. George) posted 25 assists and four digs, and freshman Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) came in for the fourth set and handed out eight helpers with one kill. Freshman libero Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) added a team-best 15 digs for VC.

                  Vaughan hit .500 en route to his game-best kill mark, and freshman teammate Gabe Shankweiler added 15 kills, four digs and five total blocks. Alexander Carpenter had eight kills on 11 attempts, and Kevin Aeckerle posted 47 assists and 15 digs. The Ducks concluded the match with 13 total blocks, led by Daniel Smith and his seven total rejections. Stevens posted a hitting clip of 56-15-118 (.347) on the night.

                  The Brewers will travel to Emerson College this Saturday to take on the host Lions and Endicott College in a tri-match starting at 2 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts.
