POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 1, 2014) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team dispatched of Elms College in three games in its first match of the afternoon, but was felled by Ramapo College in the night cap in four games in a non-conference tri-match Saturday from Kenyon Hall.

The Brewers (1-3) were never in any trouble against the Blazers, holding EC to negative hitting in each of the three sets. In the opening period, Vassar used a 7-0 spurt to take a big lead, cruising to a 1-0 match edge. Sophomore
Erik Halberg (Newark, DE/Salesianum School) had three kills on three attempts in the set, while
Christian Lizana (Dublin, PA/Pennridge) also added three kills for VC.
Vassar would hit a whopping .611 in the second set, converting on 12 of its 16 attacks to cruise to a commanding 2-0 lead. The Brewers clinched their first win of the season in the third set, thanks to siding out at a season-high of 85 percent (12-14). Freshman setter
Quinn Rutledge (Chesterfield, VA/Cosby) posted a match-best 22 helpers, and
Reno Kriz (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) added six kills (6-0-9) and five aces. The Brewers hit at a .483 (34-6-58) percentage against Elms, fifth-best for a Vassar team since 2003. Angel Castro had a team-leading five kills for the Blazers (2-5).
The second of the match of the day witnessed the Brewers struggle to convert offensively, as the squad posted an attacking percentage of .162 (51-28-142). Much of that had to do with the large block of the Roadrunners (4-2), who rejected a total of 15.5 VC attempts. After Ramapo earned the first set, the Brewers knotted the match at one after a game that saw VC terminate at a contest-best .250 percentage.
The third set would be back-and-forth, featuring 13 tie scores and six lead changes. Down 23-18, the Brewers rallied to even the ledger at 23 thanks to five consecutive points, three coming on Kriz kills. Each team had a chance to win the set, but the Roadrunners thwarted a Vassar game point and scored four of the next five points to pull out the game. The final set saw everything go in the direction of Ramapo, as it would pick up the match victory.
Kriz was again stellar for Vassar, as he established a new career-best with 22 kills, chalking up a 22-4-52 (.346) clip. Senior
Joe Pyne (Los Angeles, CA/Oakwood Secondary) posted a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs, while
Colin White-Dzuro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Royal St. Georges) finished with 41 assists and nine digs. Freshman libero
Trey Cimorelli (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) set a new career-high with a match-best 19 digs.
Halberg and junior

Ahjon Petty had 17 terminations to pace RC, with Chris Sidnam and Mike Kane supplementing the Ramapo attack with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Kurt MacDonald added 16 digs for Roadrunners, who were great receiving serve; posting just two errors on 91 VC serves.
The Brewers will jump back into United Volleyball Conference action next Saturday afternoon in Boston, MA, taking on Nazareth College at 1 p.m. and D'Youville College at 5 p.m. on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
