Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 28, 2014) – Bard goalkeeper Kelsey O'Brien made 14 saves on 35 Vassar shots while allowing only one goal, as the Raptors played VC to a 1-1 tie Tuesday afternoon. Despite a shocking 35-2 shot advantage for the Brewers, they could only find the net once, as senior
Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, Ca/Westlake) scored her team's lone goal. The result further complicates Vassar's road to a Liberty League playoff berth, as the Brewers move to 8-5-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the conference. Bard finishes its season 5-11-2 and 0-7-1 in the Liberty League.
The second half saw the only scoring of the afternoon, as Bard senior Hallie Nolan struck first for the Raptors in the 52
nd minute. On a free kick nearly 35 yards away from the goal on the right side of the field, Nolan blasted a high arcing shot over the outstretched arms of junior goalkeeper
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington). The ball fit perfectly into the top left corner, giving Bard a 1-0 lead on their final shot of the afternoon.
A frustrated but determined Brewer squad rallied back, pelting O'Brien with shot after shot to try and find the equalizer. Wheeler finally broke through for VC in the 67
th minute, after junior
Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage) found an opening down the right wing. She played a cross across the box for Wheeler, who headed the ball past O'Brien into the right side of the net to even the game 1-1.
Vassar continued to pressure throughout the second half, getting shots on goal and putting cross after cross into the box. The Raptor defense held firm, clearing away loose balls to send the game into overtime.
In overtime the Brewers again held the attacking advantage, keeping the ball into their offensive third looking for a game-winning opportunity. In the first OT period, junior
Kamaria Coley (Washington, DC/Acad. Of the Holy Cross) produced a quality shot in the box, but O'Brien was there once again to make the save, and the teams headed into a second period of extra time.
VC again put a spray of shots towards the goal, but none were on target as the final seconds ticked off the clock and the Raptors earned their first-ever tie against the Brewers. VC entered today's game 16-0 in the all-time series between the schools.
The Brewers took a season-high 17 shots in the first 45 minutes of play, but were kept scoreless by a serious of outstanding saves by O'Brien and balls deflecting off the post.
Vassar will now need to win at Union this coming Saturday, November 1 to guarantee a spot in the Liberty League postseason tournament. A loss will knock the Brewers out of the playoffs, while a tie will give way to a series of tiebreakers and other situations for VC to clinch a seed.
