Second Half Goals Lift No. 13 Skidmore Past Vassar Field Hockey 2-1

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (October 25, 2014) – The Vassar College field hockey team led at the half over hosting No. 13 Skidmore College, but two second-half tallies boosted the Thoroughbreds to a Liberty League victory in the conference finale for both teams Saturday.

With the loss, the Brewers (11-4, 3-3 Liberty League) secure the No. 3 seed in the Liberty League Tournament, and will travel back to Skidmore November 5 at a time to be determined for the semifinal round. Top-seeded University of Rochester will host William Smith College in the other first round contest.

Vassar College had a tough task Saturday trying to knock off the Skidmore at home, which no Liberty League team has done since 2009, a span of 24 games. The Brewers fended off some early pressure from the Thoroughbreds, and started to earn some possession towards the middle of the opening half.

In the 21st minute of the game the Brewers lifted the lid on the game's scoring, as junior forward Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) chased down a cross from sophomore Flora Crichton-Stuart (New York, NY/St. Mary's School) and beat Skidmore keeper Amy Beck with a tough shot along the goal line to put Vassar up 1-0.

The goal for Wiebe was her team-leading eighth of the season, and with the tally she also moved into fourth all-time in goals (22) at Vassar. Wiebe vaulted herself into sixth in career points at Vassar as well. Following the goal, Skidmore charged forward but junior keeper Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) made three stops of the final 15 minutes to send VC into the locker room with the lead.

Skidmore led at the half in shots 9-4, but would come out of the gates in the second stanza quickly. Just over five minutes into the second half, Skidmore evened the game at one as Melanie Webb scored her 12th goal of the season with help from Dani DeGregory on a tip-in off a penalty corner.

The Thoroughbreds (13-3, 5-1 Liberty League) got the game-winner from Sam Revera at 54:05 of the contest on a corner, as she took the shot off the stick stop from Sofia San Marco after Webb started the play. VC was unable to pull even with Skidmore down the stretch, falling for the third consecutive game.

Bhasin finished with a season-high eight saves for the Brewers, who were outshot in the game 21-4. Wiebe took three of the four shots for Vassar. Beck made one save for Skidmore.

The Brewers will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday evening at the University of Scranton at 7 p.m. in more non-conference action.
