Box Score SCHENECTADY, NY (October 15, 2014) – The Vassar College field hockey team saw it's six-game win streak come to an end Wednesday, falling 2-1 in overtime to Union College in Liberty League play from Frank Bailey Field.
In overtime, the Brewers had many chances with the best coming on a penalty corner eight minutes in but couldn't convert. Shortly after the corner, Union (5-7, 1-3 Liberty League) charged down and Allison Troy fired a cross 9:13 into the extra period that deflected off a Vassar (12-2, 3-1 Liberty) defender and into the cage for the game-winner.
The first half saw the Brewers start out quick, but struggle to maintain control of the play as the host Dutchwomen started to test Vassar College goalkeeper
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale). Union broke through to open the scoring at 18:32 of the contest, as Troy controlled a pass off a penalty corner and slammed it home for her first tally of the day.
Later in the half, Vassar College junior
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) got free and was one-on-one with the keeper, but Laura Aptowicz charged forward and slid to knock the ball away from Wiebe. Wiebe had three chances late in the half for the Brewers, but none would find the back of the cage.
The Dutchwomen held a 12-10 edge in shots in the first period, while Vassar earned three penalty corners to the two of the host Dutchwomen. VC opened the second half with an early flurry in front of Aptowicz, but again she was there to deny Wiebe.
The Brewers finally got on the board at 43:27 of the game, thanks to another penalty corner goal. Sophomore
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) gathered a deflected pass from
Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) and fired the shot to the left of Aptowicz for her seventh goal of the year.
The second half would see Vassar dominate possession, earning 10 of the 11 shots during the period, but the Brewers could not find the all-important second score. In the extra session, Wiebe had a chance after the keeper had charged forward, but her attempt whizzed just past the right post. VC also had a shot from point blank range minutes later, but Aptowicz made a stop from three yards away to keep the game tied at one.
Vassar College held a 23-15 advantage on shots, including putting 12 on cage, but Aptowicz made 11 saves for the Dutchwomen. The Brewers also earned nine penalty corners to just the three of Union. Bhasin finished with five stops in net for Vassar.
The loss is the first for the Brewers since September 12 against SUNY Geneseo, and their first regular season, true road loss since October 23 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a span of 19 games. Vassar College still needs one more win to clinch a spot in the Liberty League Tournament.
The Brewers are off until next Friday, traveling to St. Lawrence University (5-8, 0-4 Liberty) Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Canton, NY for more conference play.
