POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 21, 2014) – Host Vassar College shot 50.8 percent from the field and put four in double figures as the Brewer women's basketball team knocked off local rival Bard College 79-61 Tuesday in a Liberty League tilt from the Athletics and Fitness Center (AFC).
Senior guard
Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) led all scorers with 22 points, as she was 7-of-12 from the floor, knocking down six of her eight shots from deep. Over the last two games, Matsuoka has made 12 of the 14 trifectas she has taken, and is now shooting over 50 percent from deep on the year.
Matsuoka wasn't the only player that did her part offensively, as every Brewer dressed had at least one field goal. Sophomore guard
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) posted 16 points, senior
Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) had 15 points and junior
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) chalked up 13 points.
The game was close throughout the first half, as the Brewers couldn't pull away from the visiting Raptors (1-12, 0-4 Liberty League). VC led for all of 38 seconds of the first period, and ended up taking a 31-28 lead into the break.
After halftime, the game remained close until an early 13-3 run from Vassar extended its lead out to a game-high 13 points. Matsuoka took over during the next few minutes, knocking down four triples over a 2:10 stretch to put the Brewers ahead by 19 at 62-43 with 8:52 to play. The VC lead would swell up to as much as 21 points with 1:30 remaining, as VC cruised to its fourth conference win of the year.
Vassar was deadly from the floor in the second half, making 17 of its 31 field goals, and finished the game 6-of-12 (50 percent) from deep. Along with her scoring, Matsuoka added four assists and three steals, while Senftleber had seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Drakeley also had a solid game on the glass, as she corralled seven caroms.
Junior
Michaela Janowski (Stratham, NH/Exeter Area) stuffed the box score, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out a team-best five assists while posting three thefts. The Brewers continued their red-hot shooting from the free throw stripe, making 11-of-13 (84.5 percent). Over the last four games, VC has made 61 of its 67 (91 percent) of its free throws.
Tytravia Riley, who added to her conference-leading double double total with 19 points and 13 rebounds, led visiting Bard College. Liz Freud registered 10 points, and Joanna Regan added eight points. Bianka Bell had seven points, five boards and six assists for the Raptors, who made 24-of-69 (34.8 percent) from the field. BC also held a slight 41-38 edge on the glass, pulling in 21 offensive rebounds.
The Brewers will continue play in the Liberty League this Friday evening, as they entertain Clarkson University at 6 p.m. in the AFC. Bard will entertain St. Lawrence University Friday evening in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.
