HOBOKEN, NJ (September 7, 2013) – The Vassar College women's soccer defense redefined "holding steady" as the Brewers defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-1 in double overtime of the Stevens Engineering Cup.

    Vassar got out to the early 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of play. Junior Chloe Wheeler scored at 1:32 off of her left foot. Vassar did not get another shot off until the 81st minute of play when junior Kelsey Domb's shot was blocked.

    Nichols' most important save of the game came in the first overtime period during the 97th minute of play when Stevens' Ann Heine was awarded a penalty kick off of a yellow card on senior Becki Pearce-Probst. Heine's shot went right but was met by Nichols.

    Sophomore Kamaria Coley was Vassar's third shot of the game after the Brewers had just been called offsides in the 103rd minute. After some back-and-forth action between the Brewers and the Ducks, Coley got the ball on a breakaway where she then faked Ting out of the goal for the open net goal.

    Stevens recorded seven chances to score off of corner kicks while Vassar was not awarded one.

    Stevens outshot Vassar, 29-3, and had 17 shots on goal. Vassar had two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Nichols had 15 saves in her 104 minutes and 37 seconds in goal. The Ducks' Evelyn Ting had no saves.

    The Brewers (2-0) will next square off with Haverford College on Sunday at noon, rounding out the Stevens Engineering Cup. Stevens (0-3) will next host New York University at 3:00 pm on Sunday.

    All three of the Ducks losses came from Liberty League teams (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 5-1 and William Smith, 6-2).
