GENEVA, NY (September 28, 2013) – A day after taking No. 15 University of Rochester to overtime, the Vassar College field hockey team repeated the feat Saturday afternoon by taking the No. 5 Herons of William Smith College to an extra period. Unfortunately for VC, Saturday's game ended like Friday's, being edged out 2-1 in overtime by its hosts in Liberty League action.
The Herons (9-0, 2-0 Liberty League) opened the scoring at 10:53 of the contest, as Taylor Cappello scored her eighth goal of the season with help from Melanie O'Connor. The Vassar (4-4,0-2 Liberty) defense would settle in, holding William Smith to just one shot over the last 12 minutes of the first half.
During the opening period, Brewer keeper
Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) made four saves on nine shot attempts by WSC. The save total helped move Brelis into a tie for No. 1 on the all-time saves chart at Vassar, pulling even with Taylor Herman. Brelis would become the Brewer all-time stops leader on a Cappello shot early in the second half.
Vassar began to mount some offense through the beginning of the second half, earning two penalty corners, but couldn't mount any shots. During the middle of the period the hosts fired six attempts on net over a six-minute stretch, but Brelis and the defense of VC were up to the task.
In the waning moments of the game, Vassar fired a pair of shots but couldn't break through. The Brewers would hem William Smith in the zone, and junior
Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) pushed a pass from
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) to the left of the keeper for her fourth goal of the season at the 67:13 mark of the game.
In overtime, William Smith wasted no time by scoring on its first shot of the period, as O'Connor netted the game-winner just 38 seconds into the seven-on-seven session. It was only the third time this season WSC has been held to just two goals in a game, with the others coming against Ursinus College and No. 15 Cortland State. Also, it was only the second time that WSC has been pushed to overtime this year.
William Smith held a 19-3 lead in shots on the contest, while chalking up five of the game's seven penalty corners. Brelis made nine stops in her record-setting performance and sits with 306 in her career now, while Biz Chirco stopped one shot on the day for the Herons.
Davis fired two of the three shots for the Brewers Saturday, while
Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) took the other attempt for VC. For the second straight day, the Vassar defense of
Catherine Fiore (Essex Falls, NJ/West Essex), Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School), Kerrin Poole (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy) and company held one of the highest scoring teams in the nation to two goals.
The Brewers will continue their five-game road trip Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Oneonta, NY with a non-conference affair with Hartwick College.
