Wiebe’s Goals Lead Brewer Field Hockey Past Elms College 4-0 Saturday

Box Score                   CHICOPEE, MA – Sophomore forward Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) netted a pair of tallies Saturday afternoon as the Vassar College field hockey breezed by Elms College 4-0 in non-conference play.

The Brewers (4-2) dominated the early going, earning five penalty corners over the first 10 minutes of the contest. Vassar would open the scoring in the 13th minute, as Wiebe knocked in a rebound of a shot off of a penalty corner to give the visitors an early lead.

Vassar continued to pepper the cage with shots, taking four shots in the next five minutes. Elms keeper Samantha Alvino was up to the task though, keeping her team within one after making eight stops in the opening 17 minutes of the contest. 17:05 into the contest though, Vassar would double its advantage thanks to a nicely converted penalty corner, as Dara Davis (Guilford, CT/Guilford) pushed a pass from Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) into the back of the cage for a 2-0 edge.

Less than 10 minutes later, senior midfielder Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) netted her third goal in the past two games, as she used a Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) assist to beat Alvino to her left. VC held a strong advantage in shots in the opening period, 14-0, while picking up all 10 penalty corners during the half.

With less than four minutes to play in regulation, Wiebe would pick up the double with help from Caso on a shot to the top left to end the scoring. It was Wiebe's first career multi-goal game, and also marked the fourth game in the last five times out for Vassar that the sophomore forward has dented the cage.

The Brewers finished the contest with a 27-0 edge in shots, also holding a large advantage in penalty corners, 16-1. Blazer keeper Samantha Alvino was stellar despite allowing four goals, as she made 21 saves on the afternoon. Brewer keeper Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) faced only one shot, as she recorded the shutout.

The Brewers will hop into Liberty League play this upcoming week, traveling to Rochester, NY to take on No. 16 University of Rochester for a conference tilt.
