SCHENECTADY, NY (May 4, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team split with Liberty League-leading opponent, Union College during double header action Saturday afternoon. The Brewers picked up the early, 4-0 win while dropping the second game, 7-2.
Junior pitcher
Joe Lovizio pitched his third shutout of the season in the first game. He pitched a full game with only six hits while striking out five Dutchmen. The Brewer bats broke Union's Dane O'Neil's perfect, 6-0 season with the loss. O'Neil gave up six hits and all four, earned runs. He also struck out five batters but unlike Lovizio, gave up three walks whilst Lovizio didn't walk a single batter.
The Brewers (16-17-1, 11-13LL) will finish their regular season tomorrow when they host the Dutchmen (23-10, 19-5LL) at noon. Tomorrow is also the Brewer's Senior Day when
Lawrence Flicker,
Max Frankel,
A.J. Kim,
Sean Morash,
Zander Mrlik and
Mike Perrone will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
Sophomore third baseman,
Jason Garfinkel singled through the right side, bringing home junior second baseman,
Dave Robbins and giving Vassar the lead at 1-0 in the fourth inning, which they would not relinquish.
Junior first baseman
Brett Zaziski doubled in the fifth to score Perrone. Morash hit a grounder to O'Neil, allowing Zaziski to run home on the throw for the 3-0 Brewer lead. Perrone picked up an RBI of his own in the sixth when his single sent Kim across home plate.
Zaziski was 3-for-4 from the plate in game one with one RBI and one run. He picked up another RBI in game two from his 2-for-4 outing.
Zaziski's single to left field that drove in Perrone in the first of the nightcap, gave Vassar the 1-0 lead, but didn't hold. Union scored four runs in the bottom of the third, giving itself a 4-1 lead. The Dutchmen piled on another two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth. The 7-1 lead was too much despite Kim's double to left field in the top of the ninth that scored Robbins, as Vassar would have to settle for the split on the twin bill.
Freshman
Jonathan Hong picked up his fourth loss of the season. He pitched six innings with seven hits and six runs (five earned). Phil Kemp got his fifth win of the season, going six innings with only four hits.
