LOUDONVILLE, NY (May 10, 2013) – The fourth-seeded Vassar College baseball team bowed out of its first ever Liberty League tournament with a 6-1 loss to top-seeded Union at Siena Field on Friday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Brewers advanced through the loser's bracket with an 8-6 win over third-seeded St. Lawrence. Vassar finished the 2013 season with its second-highest win total in program history (18 games).

Vassar took an early lead against Union on a two-out RBI single by third baseman Jason Garfinkel in the top of the second inning, but would not get any more runs off Dutchmen starter Seth Roberts, who allowed five hits and struck out three in eight innings, or reliever Quinn Rhoda.

Trailing 3-1 with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the eighth, the Brewers saw their last best chance go by the board as Union center fielder Sam Caruso made a diving catch on a ball hit off the bat of Vassar second baseman Dave Robbins. The Dutchmen would tack on three insurance runs in the bottom of the frame and go on to win 6-1.

First baseman Brett Zaziski had two hits to lead the Vassar lineup while designated hitter Brooks English and right fielder Sean Morash each doubled. Morash hit a three-run home run earlier this morning to help lead Vassar past St. Lawrence 8-6. Starting pitcher Jonathan Hong went 5.1 innings and took the loss for the Brewers while Zander Mrlik made his second relief appearance of the day; the latter pitched seven and two-thirds innings across two games today, earning the win against the Saints in the process.

The Brewers finished the season 18-20-1 overall and set program records for conference victories (12) and highest Liberty League finish (fourth). Union improved to 26-12 and will face second-seeded Rensselaer tomorrow for the championship. Union must beat RPI twice or the Engineers will claim their first tourney title since 2008. Union has never won the Liberty League tournament.

Morash and Zaziski were named to the All-Tournament Team.
