Baseball Drops First Two Games Of RPI Series, 3-0, 14-7

Zaziski went 6-for-9 in total for today with two runs and an RBI.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 6, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team's ninth inning scoring run fell short in the nightcap against Liberty League opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 14-7. The Brewers were swept in today's double header, as they fell in the opening game, 3-0.

Freshman Nick Johnson posted three RBI in the nightcap, leading Vassar's scoring effort. Sophomore lefty Johnny Mrlik struck out three Engineer batters in the first game as he pitched all seven innings against RPI's Mike Campisi. Campisi struck out five Brewers but gave up nine hits while Mrlik gave up seven hits.

The Brewers fall to 7-8 and 3-5 in the Liberty League. They will next travel to RPI tomorrow afternoon, finishing out the series against RPI in twin bill action. RPI jumps to 11-6 and 4-4 in the League. Tomorrow's double header is scheduled for a noon start.

Freshman catcher Dakota Sagnelli started the setup of the ninth inning with a single to left field and then advanced to second after freshman left fielder Cory Wuenschell popped up to the short stop, Nick Palmiero and Brewer senior shot stop Mike Perrone grounded out to second baseman Andrew Kalish.

Freshman Cameron Hood smacked a single down the right field line, bringing in Sagnelli and making the score, 14-4 in favor of RPI. Hood also advanced to second base during the play when right fielder Shane Matthews overthrew the play at home.

The Brewers scored again when junior Brett Zaziski singled to center field and Hood crossed home. Johnson brought Zaziski home when he singled down the left field line. Johnson also advanced junior second baseman Dave Robbins who got a single up the middle before Johnson's at-bat.

Sophomore right fielder Dan McCormack drove in Vassar's final run in the nightcap when he grounded to RPI's Palmiero. Palmiero bobbled the ball when he lost sight of the ball with Robbins blocking his view on his way to third. Robbins crossed home plate on the plate.

Freshman pitcher Jonathan Hong picked up the loss in the nightcap on the mound. He pitched four innings, giving up six runs, six hits and striking out one Engineer batter. Vassar rotated four more pitchers in the lineup with senior Max Frankel pitching one inning, freshman Elijah McDonnaugh pitching two innings, sophomore Henry Braun going one inning and junior Harrison Remler clsoing out the game.

Today's second game was the first outing for McDonnaugh and Braun. McDonnaugh gave up three hits while retiring three Engineers. He also gave up four runs. Braun faced three RPI batters and gave up no hits and no walks.

Sean Conroy picked up his third win of the season for RPI in the nightcap. He retired four Brewers, allowed one walk, one earned run out of the three total runs he was credited with and gave up six hits.

Engineer Campisi gave up just two hits in four innings during the early game. The Brewers managed to load the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings, but RPI's pitcher held Vassar to a shutout.

Jonny Rio went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Kalish also managed a 2-for-4 stay at the plate in game one, leading RPI in the 3-0 win.

Zaziski continues to keep his strong batting average (.482 after today's double header), going 2-for-4 in game one and 4-for-5 in the nightcap. He added two runs and an RBI in the closing game. Senior Sean Morash went 2-for-3 and senior catcher A.J. Kim went 2-for-2 in game one.
