Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 5, 2013) – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team made a furious second half charge to erase a six-goal deficit and force overtime but ultimately came up short to visiting Liberty League foe Clarkson in the extra session by a 14-12 final margin. Freshman midfielder Isabelle Goldstein paced the Brewers with three goals and two assists.

Clarkson jumped out to an early 4-1 lead that it largely maintained throughout the first half. Katie VanDeValk scored for the Golden Knights with 1:14 left to put the visitors ahead 8-4 at halftime.

Down 10-4 with approximately 16:30 remaining in the contest, Vassar began its climb back into the ballgame. Sophomore attack Dara Davis scored to jumpstart a 5-0 Brewers run over the next four minutes to make it a one-goal game; Goldstein and junior defender Phoebe Tzannes had a goal and an assist each in that spurt.

Following a Clarkson goal, Tzannes would score again to bring Vassar within one; Davis would then find the net with 3:12 remaining to draw the Brewers level for the first time since early in the first half. Neither team would score again in regulation, however, and VanDeValk's goal with 3:47 left in overtime would give Clarkson a lead it would not relinquish.

The loss drops the Brewers to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in Liberty League play while the Golden Knights improve to 7-2 on the year and 2-2 in conference action. The two teams will continue Liberty League play tomorrow with Vassar hosting St. Lawrence at Weinberg Field and Clarkson heading 30 minutes upriver to take on Bard. Both those games will start at 2:00 pm.

Davis, Tzannes, senior midfielder Marissa Reilly and sophomore midfielder Katherine Stegmann scored two goals apiece for Vassar to go along with Goldstein's five-point effort. Tzannes won four draw controls and junior midfielder Malena Harrang picked up four ground balls. Sophomore Katharine Pula played the first half in goal with freshman Mallory Tyler entering at halftime and going the final 36 minutes.

VanDeValk led Clarkson to the win with five goals and an assist with Alyssa Cristaldi (three goals, two assists), Christine Wright (two goals, three assists) and Marissa Mastronardi (two goals, one assist) also finding the net multiple times. VanDeValk, Emma Jeffery and Noelle Miller all collected five ground balls; Wright won seven draw controls. Kara DiNatale made nine saves in net for the Golden Knights.
