Baseball Splits With RIT, Finishes Series, 3-1; Z. Mrlik Picks Up Fifth Win

ROCHESTER, NY (April 28, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team picked up another important Liberty League win over Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium during their final double header against the Tigers. The Brewers fought back for a secure, 8-4 win in game one and dropped a 20-0 loss in the nightcap.

Senior pitcher Zander Mrlik threw 76 pitches and did not allow another hit after the Tigers' first inning scoring was done of game one. He hit two batters in the fourth but had five, 1-2-3 innings. Mrlik improves to 5-0 on the season.

The split gives Vassar a 14-16-1 and 10-12 record in the League. They will next travel to Purchase, NY to face Manhattanville College on Wednesday, May 1 in a single game at 4:00 pm. RIT settles to 6-14 in the League and 11-18 overall. The Tigers will next host Oswego State in a double header on Tuesday, April 30 at 2:00 pm.

RIT jumped out to an early, 4-0 lead in game one. All four of their runs came in the top of the first before Mrlik's arm and the Vassar bats turned the table. Senior Sean Morash shot a home run to left field in the bottom of the second with junior Dave Robbins waiting on base.

Freshman Nick Johnson and Robbins tied the game in the third inning, 4-4 with a single to right center and a ground out RBI. Robbins took the lead in the fifth inning with a single to left center, scoring freshman Brooks English and junior Brett Zaziski. Junior Parker Werline added another run in the inning for a 7-4 lead when he hit a sacrificed flyball to right field, allowing Johnson to tag up and score.

English finished the scoring for the Brewers with a sacrificed line ball to left field, scoring senior Mike Perrone.

RIT got four runs in the third and five in the fifth, securing a strong foothold against the Brewers. Eight more runs in the eighth inning increased their lead to 18-0.
