Vassar Tripped Up By Union in Home Finale

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 24, 2013) – The Vassar College men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-8 defeat to visiting Liberty League rival Union at Weinberg Field Wednesday evening in a game that marked the end of the 2013 home schedule. Freshman attack Noah Parson had four goals and an assist for the Brewers.

Parson scored his first goal just 72 seconds into the contest and when freshman midfielder Shane Flattery followed with a goal only a minute later, it appeared Vassar had a chance at pulling off a landmark victory over a Union program that has qualified for the last two NCAA Tournaments. However, the Dutchmen would score five unanswered goals and convert four times on the power play in the first half to take a lead they would not surrender.

Vassar dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in Liberty League action while Union improved to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League. The Brewers conclude the 2013 campaign at conference foe Clarkson on Saturday with the opening faceoff set for 1:00 pm. Union hosts Skidmore at 5:00 pm Saturday with the final slot in the Liberty League tournament on the line.

Flattery finished with two goals to supplement Parson's four-goal outburst for Vassar. Junior attack Max Herman and sophomore midfielder Scott Brekne each notched a goal and an assist; Brekne also won 15 faceoffs, tying his career high, and claimed 16 ground balls. In goal, junior Andrew Nicol made 11 saves in three quarters with freshman Ben Lehr making five saves in the final 15 minutes.

Joe Cordrey scored four goals to lead seven Dutchmen that scored twice. Alex Stone won 14 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls with Devyn Jeffries making eight saves and Brody Shea three for Union. Nolan Stauffer had two goals and three assists.
