Baseball Drops Skidmore Series With Split; Perrone Makes History

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 21, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team managed to split a double header on Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field against Liberty League opponent, Skidmore College. The Brewers dropped the first game, 6-0 but picked up a win in the nightcap, 2-1.

The Thoroughbreds won the series despite today's split. They picked up two shutout wins on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY, 1-0, 3-0.

The split gives Vassar a record of 7-11 in the Liberty League (11-15-1 overall). They will next host SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, April 24 at 4:00 pm. Skidmore has a League record of 7-11 (11-16 overall). The will next travel to Plattsburgh, NY to face Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, April 23 at 4:00 pm.

Freshman center fielder Nick Johnson gave Vassar the go-ahead RBI single to right field in the bottom of the fifth. Junior first baseman Brett Zaziski crossed home on the play for the 2-1 winning lead.

Sophomore left fielder Dan McCormack scored when sophomore third baseman Kyle Casey had a single RBI to right field of his own in the bottom of the second.

Senior righty Zander Mrlik picked up his fourth win of the season (4-0). He pitched six innings of the second game with three strikeouts. He walked five runners and only gave up four hits. Freshman Connor Cucalon came in and pitched the final three innings with a strikeout and only two hits.

Isaac Forman picked up the loss for Skidmore (0-3). He pitched seven innings with four strikeouts, eight hits, two earned runs and no walks. He also hit three Brewer batters: Senior right fielder Sean Morash, McCormack and senior catcher A.J. Kim.

Both Zaziski and Johnson were 2-for-4 in game two.

Senior shortstop Mike Perrone made Vassar College history in game one. During his second at-bat in the bottom of the third, Perrone singled to left field and advanced A.J. Kim to third base. The history segment of that play was that it was Perrone's 174th career hit. He replaces Jon Mandel '07 as the All-Time Leader. Perrone added another two hits on his 3-for-4 performance in game one to lead the Brewers.

Johnson also hit his first collegiate career triple today as he went 1-for-3.

Freshman righty Jonathan Hong picked up his third loss of the season (1-3) with two strikeouts and three of his six runs were earned. Nick Petrella (5-1) picked up the Skidmore win with four strikeouts and only six hits allowed.
