SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 20, 2013) - The Vassar College men's baseball team dropped two tight contests, 1-0 and 3-0, to Skidmore College on windy Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs in Liberty League play.
The Brewers held the first game level until the sixth inning, when Thoroughbred first baseman Alex Barber single, bringing in the game-winning run. Skidmore went on to take the second game with a run in the third and two in the fouth innings.
The Brewers now 10-14-1 (6-10 Liberty League) will host SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, April 24, at 4:00 pm in non-conference action. The Thoroughbreds, now 12-15 (8-10 Liberty League) will next travel to Plattsburgh, NY to face Plattsburgh State on Monday, April 21, at 4:00 pm.
The Brewers had seven hits against Skidmore in the first game while their defense, under the leadership of junior pitcher
Joe Lovizio, allowed only four hits. Lovizio had three strikeouts and walked only two batters in six innings. He is now 2-3 on the season after picking up the loss. Despite the offensive production, the Brewers were unable to find the run they needed, and Barber's single RBI proved to be the difference in the tight matchup Junior second baseman
Dave Robbins led the bats with a 2-for-4 performance. Freshman centerfielder
Nick Johnson had a double on his 1-for-3 day.
Skidmore capitalized on an error early in the second game from senior short stop,
Mike Perrone. A double from outfielder Leejay Pollacchi brought in an unearned run to break the deadlock in the third inning during the next at-bat.
Skidmore added to their total in the fourth inning, when Thoroughbred batter Jeb Clarke singled and brought home another run when Alex Pavelock crossed plate. Pollacchi's RBI was followed later in the inning by Matty Tatkow, who stole home to give the game its final run. Junior
Parker Werline had a double in the loss for the Brewers, while sophomore pitcher
Johnny Mrlik allowed seven hits but sat a day-high, eight batters.
