POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 14, 2013) – Three early runs in the second game of the Liberty League double header led the Vassar College baseball team to an early series split against St. Lawrence University. The Brewers won, 4-2 but fell, 4-3 in the first game on Saturday at Prentiss Field after this weekend's series was moved from Canton, NY to Brewer Country.

Junior first baseman Brett Zaziski hit a triple to right field on his first at-bat against the Saints in the nightcap, driving home senior short stop, Mike Perrone. Perrone was walked as the lead-off batter and continued his stolen base dominance, finding his way to third base. He leads the team with 17 stolen bases this season and eight of those have come in four of the last five games.

The split gives the Brewers an overall record of 9-10-1 and 5-7 in League action. The Saints have a record of 11-7 and 6-4 in the Liberty League. The two teams will complete the series tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Prentiss Field.

Zaziski was perfect in the nightcap from the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. His second scoring hit came in the top of the third when he singled to center field, sending Perrone across the plate again for a 2-0 Vassar lead.

Junior second baseman Dave Robbins flied out to center field for the sacrificed RBI. Freshman designated hitter Brooks English crossed home for the 3-0 lead. English scored in the top of the seventh for the 4-0 win off a wild pitch by Saints' Eric McGuire.

Sophomore pitcher Johnny Mrlik picked up his first win of the season, going 7.1 innings and striking out eight St. Lawrence batters. He gave up one run off the six hits. Freshman Connor Cucalon came in relief in the eighth inning, being credited with the Brewers' first save of the season. He gave up two hits and one run.

The Saints got off to an early, 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in Game One. Catcher Zane Fish tripled to right field with bases juiced for three RBI.

Robbins fought back for Vassar with an RBI triple to right field of his own, scoring Zaziski. The real Brewer comeback came in the bottom of the seventh when Perrone singled to right field, scoring senior right fielder, Sean Morash. Sophomore left fielder, Kyle Casey scored off a pass ball, bringing Vassar within one run, 4-3.

Junior Joe Lovizio picked up his second lost of the season, pitching six innings with four strikeouts, four hits and four runs.

Joe Riley got the win for the Saints, keeping his untarnished 5-0 record on the mound. He pitched 6.2 innings with two strikeouts, seven hits and three runs. Andrew Weitzel came in for the save, giving up one hit.
