POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 10, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team went into extra innings with the score tied at 2-2 against Skyline Conference opponent The College at Old Westbury Wednesday evening at Prentiss Field, but the game was called due to lightning and the approaching storm.
Senior lefty
Lawrence Flicker pitched seven complete innings and gave up eight hits and both Panther runs. Senior
Max Frankel came in for the next two innings and recorded the only strikeout for the Brewers. Freshman
Cameron Hood was on the mound when the game was called.
Tyler Kapela pitched five innings, giving up three hits, one run and walking two Brewers. Arismendy Nunez got the only strikeout for the Panthers and Stephen Chapter gave up the other Vassar run.
The Brewers go to 8-9-1 on the season and remain at 4-6 in the Liberty League. They will next travel to Canton, NY to face Liberty League opponent St. Lawrence University in double headers on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14. The Panthers have a record of 12-12-1 and 6-2 in the Skyline Conference. They will next travel to Cortland, NY to face #1 SUNY Cortland on Friday, April 12.
Paul Valerio singled off the first at-bat of the day for Old Westbury in the first and then came all the way home on the next at-bat when Brian Walsh doubled to right center, giving the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Vassar freshman center fielder
Nick Johnson doubled to to right field with a shot that bounced off the wall. Senior right fielder
Sean Morash singled to left field, advancing Johnson to third. Sophomore third baseman
Jason Garfinkel grounded to the short stop, Eddie Hernandez, reaching first on a fielder's choice as Hernandez threw to second, getting the second out of the inning. Despite the second out of the inning, Johnson still was able to score off the play, tying the game at one apiece.
Valerio scored again in the top of the fifth when Jeremy Delgado doubled to left center and gave Old Westbury the 2-1 lead. Vassar tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when junior second baseman
Dave Robbins and Johnson both were walked by Westbury pitcher, Stephen Chapter. Robbins was able to cross the plate when Morash bunted to first baseman John Angelino who over-threw the second baseman covering first, Steve Mare.
Freshman
Cameron Hood held the Panthers scoreless in a tense top of the 10th inning. After two quick ground outs to senior short stop
Mike Perrone and junior first baseman
Brett Zaziski, Walsh hit a double to left field and then reached third on a wild pitch. Despite walking Delgado, Hood forced Angelino to battle corner-cutting pitches until he finally sent one sailing to Robbins for the third out.
Morash went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI today, leading the Vassar bats. Robbins reached base three times from his 1-for-3 outing and two walks.
Valerio led the Old Westbury offense with a 3-for-5 outing and two runs. Walsh followed with a 3-for-4 effort and an RBI.
