POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 29, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team split a twin bill with the University of Rochester, dropping a 13-inning nail-biter 4-3 before cruising to a smooth 2-0 shutout in the second game on Friday afternoon at Prentiss Field, opening Liberty League action for the season. Senior righthander
Zander Mrlik tossed a one-hit shutout for the Brewers in Game 2.
The Brewers went toe-to-toe with the Yellowjackets for 12 innings in the first game, but succumbed when Rochester right-fielder Josh Ludwig's sacrifice bunt put his team up 4-3 in the 13th. The Brewers saw a maked turnaround in the nightcap, where strong defense and excellent pitching from senior captain
Zander Mrlik earned them the win.
The Brewers improve to 5-4 and 1-1 in league action. The Jackets remain even at 6-6 (2-2 Liberty League) as the two teams will meet again tomorrow, finishing their series with a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
A wild pitch put the Yellowjackets up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Brewers responded in kind when
Parker Werline's sacrifice fly brought in two RBI's at the bottom of the first. Rochester tied the game at the top of the following inning, when center fielder Sam Slutsky singled to right field to bring in left fielder Jake Meyerson.
The game stayed tied until the 7th, when Yellowjackets second baseman Ethan Sander singled up the middle to bring in another RBI and put his team up 3-2. However, Vassar rallied back from the setback, and in the bottom of the seventh senior
Mike Perrone's sacrifice grounder brought in sophomore
Jason Garfinkel to tie the game and send it to extra innings. But the Brewers could not add to their tally, and Ludwig's RBI proved to be the final of the game.
Despite the tough loss Vassar rebounded and cruised to a comfortable 2-0 second game under the leadership of Mrlik, who threw five strikeouts and allowed only one hit in the seven-inning game.
Junior
Dave Robbins and junior
