POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 27, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team dropped their home opener to Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday night, 7-3, despite a late, eighth inning run for a comeback.

Junior first baseman Brett Zaziski doubled to right field in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded, giving Vassar the desperately needed three-run spurt. With sophomore third baseman Jason Garfinkel, senior short stop Mike Perrone and freshman center fielder Nick Johnson crossing home plate off the hit, Vassar came within two of tying the game, 5-3.

The Brewers remain positive despite the loss, with a record of 4-3 as they next host Liberty League opponent University of Rochester on Friday, March 29 at 1:00 pm. The Knights advance to a record of 5-6 and will next host John Jay College on Thursday, March 28 at 4:00 pm at the Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, NY.

Vassar had a near comeback in the bottom of the eighth after Mount St. Mary added two runs in the top of the inning. Zaziski walked to first with one out. Senior right fielder Sean Morash flew out to left field, giving Vassar two outs with Zaziski still held at first. Freshman designated hitter Brooks English and junior second baseman Dave Robbins both walked, loading the bases for freshman catcher Cory Wuenschell.

Wuenschell unfortunately only caught a piece of the pitch from Knights' Silverio Santiago for a 1-to-3 groundout at first, ending the inning.

Matt Shumacher walked away with the win on the mound, increasing his record to 1-1. He gave up five hits and all three runs were earned while striking out three Brewers.

Senior Lawrence Flicker received the loss, pitching 5.1 innings. He led the game in strikeouts, retiring four of the 22 batters he faced.

As a team, Vassar went 6-for-33 while Mount St. Mary was only 9-for-31. Perrone went 2-for-5 with a run for the Brewers. Both Mike Leone and Vinnie Carminati went 2-for-5 for the Knights.
