Six-Goal Third Quarter Leads Men's Lacrosse Past Manhattanville, 12-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 2, 2013) – While down 5-4 in the third quarter, senior midfielder Ryan McCarthy ran through defenders for a solo, game-tying goal. That tally was followed by a similar tally by freshman attacker, Noah Parson, pushing the Vassar men's lacrosse team to a 6-5 lead. The Brewers would not relinquish their edge and defeated Manhattanville College, 12-7, on a cold Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

Sophomore midfielder Sean Brazier led the Brewer charge in the third quarter with two unassisted goals (his fourth and fifth of the season) as Vassar totaled six goals. Freshman midfielder Tyler Morrow's goal with 4:55 remaining in play was the only assisted goal for Vassar in the third. Parson earned the assist on the play.

Vassar improves to 2-1 on the season and will next host Montclair State University on Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. Today's game was the season opener for the Valiants and they will next host Western Connecticut State on Wednesday, March 6 at 4:00 pm with a record of 0-1.

Despite a game-opening goal from Valiants' Tom Tarczali (Antonio Ramos with the assist), Vassar responded with back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Scott Brekne (Parson assist) and freshman attacker Colin Cederna (Brekne assist), earning its first lead of the game, 2-1.

The mood on Weinberg Field shifted when Manhattanville scored four unanswered goals, taking a 5-2 lead with 13:33 left in the first half. The Valiants scored two goals within the final four minutes of the first quarter.

Freshman midfielder Shane Flattery got his first goal of his hat-trick performance, snapping the Valiant scoring run with 10:49 remaining in the half. Manhattanville still held a 5-3 lead going into halftime.

After the six-goal, 9-6 leading third quarter, the Brewers added three more goals in the fourth, starting with Flattery's hat-trick goal with 12:09 remaining. Cederna scored with 5:04 remaining (Max Herman assist) and Brekne finished the game with a goal in the remaining four minutes (Brazier assist).

Manhattanville was led by Will Sahakian's two goals and one assist and Tarczali's two goals.

Besides Flattery's hat-trick, Brazier and Brekne each had two goals and one assist. Cederna added two goals as well.

Junior goalie and team captain Andrew Nicol earned his second win of the season with 14 saves. Dom Poletto got the loss in goal for Manhattanville. He had 17 saves.
